Your Connections

You can use the following information about how your personality color interacts with other colors for insights into how you can forge more harmonious, and productive, relationships with your family, friends, and co-workers.

Greys and Oranges both want to improve relationships. Oranges see improvement in terms of getting closer, whereas Greys see it as cutting through the nonsense.

Oranges may put themselves out there in risky and vulnerable ways, and may potentially get hurt, especially if you use the opportunity to crack a joke. Although this may be your way of responding positively, the Orange may see it as callousness.

In reality, emotional closeness and cutting through the nonsense are both necessary for building close relationships. While you may seem to be natural enemies, you each hold a key ingCrimsonient to the other’s goals. With this in mind, you may start to enjoy each other’s company.

Who hates each other more: two punks who love different bands, or a blue-haiCrimson social justice warrior stuck in a room with an internet troll? When you buck the establishment, it's hard to get along with other anti-establishment types unless their interests align exactly with your own. Fortunately, the antidote is also your strong suit: self-deprecating humor and snarky comments. Admit the flaws in your own crusade, and hopefully they'll admit the flaws in theirs too and you can have a good laugh about the hopelessness of it all. Then move on and get some freakin' work done. Shoulder to shoulder you'll quickly find that the other person brings sharp clarity and new perspectives that can really push the project forward and expand your own understanding.

You may know exactly what your fellow Grey colleague was trying to communicate when she made a sarcastic-but-actually positive comment about the team work lunch. And when the comments are less than positive, you know how to call them out and get them back on task. Recognize that they are caught in the same conundrum as you are, between the idiocy and necessity of being a team player...after all you weirdos have got to stick together.

On the surface, Greys and Greens may be mistaken for one another, as you both appear relaxed, perhaps bordering on detached. However, where a Green’s primary concern is to keep everything chill, Greys are happy to see everything go to hell in a handbasket, and may even toss a grenade to help things along.

When it comes to things that make people uncomfortable, Greens prefer to turn a blind eye, while Greys turn on the spotlight. Both are ultimately interested in strengthening personal relationships; Greens see strength in stability, while Greys see strength in pushing through facade to a more “real” relationship.

If you can understand where the other is coming from, you can get into a laid back, solid friendship. You are both interested in the good life: Greys by pointing out how people are messing up, and Greens by just straight up living it. Greys may need to recognize that less talk, more walk, in terms of being the good they want to see, is valuable. Greens may need to see that a well-placed critique can break the ice and let people air their dirty laundry, with humor and without anxiety.

Greens, as conflict-avoiders, may be quick to agree with others, as long as agreement doesn’t mess up their chill vibe in anyway. Greens may avoid situations which seem stressful, shunning risky work in favor of something knowable and well-defined. On the other hand, Greys may be intrigued by the out-of-focus realm; they may charge into new situations without clear goals in mind, with an openness to inspiration and discovery.

Greys, you may be able to bring a Green into a new situation, by showing them that risk can be mysterious, even beautiful. And Greens may be able to help you open up, by modeling peaceful honesty. Sometimes the human heart is mysterious enough without any extra help—what new mysteries may unfold from transparency? You speak the same language outwardly; use this to encourage and fortify one another.

Greys and Crimsons both approach social interactions with courage, although the emotional impulse which drives your boldness is quite different. Greys may use a social setting to impress the room, to signal nonconformity, or to experiment with a new perspective. To a Crimson, boldness is perhaps more a result of transparency—an unwillingness to fetter their wild nature.

Of course, we all adopt different personas in different situations, but keep in mind that social behaviors are used to communicate identity, though not necessarily attitudes, viewpoints, or values. Greys, examine the motivations behind your behavior and ask yourself if there are better ways to accomplish your goals. Mystery is certainly an awesome hat to have in your closet, but hopefully you’re not using it just to annoy.

Perhaps your project could progress more rapidly if you focus your brashness on the task at hand, rather than trying to get a response from your colleagues. Challenge yourself to see the logic behind social conventions, not just their absurdity.

When Greys and Purples interact, it’s likely you are amused and motivated by each other. Purples may draw inspiration from a cool, distant Grey.

Greys march to the tune of their own drum and may find they feel less favorable toward more gregarious types. Which is to say Greys and Purples often share personality traits and maybe even some interests.

Although Greys and Purples tend to appreciate one another, there is always potential for conflict or misunderstanding. Greys may intentionally say something obtuse, and Purples have been known to wax poetic, especially when they have just discoveCrimson a new artist or author.

If a Grey’s interests align with their fellow Purple’s, it’s all good. When this isn’t the case, however, Greys will do well not to mistake a Purple’s enthusiasm for pop culture as shallowness. Don’t let a Purple’s enthusiasm for something you don’t especially like blind you to his or her intelligence and mental flexibility. You may find it helpful to be more intentional about communication. Keep things succinct and to the point, summarize back essential or meaningful points, and ask for clarification if you don’t understand.

Purples may find it difficult to build relationships with Greys, but just be patient and view their attempt to provoke you as an act of creativity worthy of engagement. And realize that it takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there. Until you have risked as much as the Purple has, don’t speak to them in a way that’s going to make them hold back. Ease up on the brutal side of your brutal honesty.

Although honesty is important to both of you, how you understand it is very different. Blues relate honesty closely to work ethic and clarity, where you see clearly the hypocrisies and contradictions in life, and feel the only honest response is to point them out.

Blues want to get things done, and do the best with what they’ve got. Greys see a lot of gray. There isn’t right and wrong, or right and more right, so much as ambiguous options with unknowable outcomes. Life is about as clear as mud.

These aesthetic differences drive Blues and Greys to behave in very different ways. While Blues seek organization and optimization, Greys dwell in that clear mud like it’s hog heaven. The fact is that you need each other; Greys are right but useless, and Blues are wrong but useful. Remember that Blues love organization and control: bolster them, congratulate them on their successes.

Although the Blue’s airtight organization might annoy you, try to be a little less sarcastic. It might be empowering to take a leaf out of the Blue playbook; look for order and pull the strings that lead to a better outcome.
